Elderly farsightedness – possible solutions

What is presbyopia or elderly farsightedness?

In certain years of life, jobs requiring sharp proximity vision are made more difficult and so simple reading is a challenge. The letters are blurred, for comfortable reading it’s necessary to move the reading more and more until the hands become “too short”. Just as facial wrinkles or gray hairs on the head, one of the first signs of aging is weakening of vision at the proximity – what is professionally called an elderly farsightedness or a presbyopia.

When does it appear?

Usually occurs after 40 years of age. Over a billion people in the world have a presbyopia.

How to enable good vision at all distances?

1. Monovision laser vision correction

Modern ablation lasers in ocular surgery can accurately shape the cornea (thin, transparent front of the eye) and thus enable partial or complete removal of refractive eye defects such as shortsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

It is also possible to solve the problem of presbyopia using the method of monovision.

It is a method of vision correction with close range diopter for one eye, and distant range diopter for another eye, which makes the brain alternate between one eye and the other, depending on whether we are looking at proximity or distance. If the patient is successfully adapted to monovision while wearing contact lenses, corneas could be laser modeled on the necessary diopters, thereby permanently avoid the need to wear contact lenses.

2. Surgical correction of elderly farsightedness with inlays

The inlays are minimally invasive and for the patient a very comfortable way of removing the elderly farsightedness – presbyopia.

Currently, the most popular are three types of inlays:

1) KAMRA

Kamra inlay

It is a small diameter ring of 3.8 mm and only 5 microns thickness, which is built into the laser made “pocket” in the cornea and provides a clear view of the near and medium distance (monitor).

2) RAINDROP

Is a 2mm diameter insert and a 32 micron thick made of hydrogels that, like a built-in contact lens, provides a clear vision

3) FLEXIVUE MICROLENS

Is micro lens made of a hydrophilic polymer with 3 mm diameter and a thickness of 15 microns at the edges

3. Application of multifocal lens in the eye – solution of diopter at all distances
