Stye

Stye

What is Stye?

Stye (outer hordeolum) is an acute purulent inflammation of the eyelid glands resulting from a blockage of the Zeiss glands. It occurs in the form of a painful nodule with a purulent tip surrounded by eyelid edema and usually lasts 7-10 days with the possibility of recurrence.
If there is a blockage of the Meibomian glands, chalazion (internal hordeolum) occurs which, unlike stye, is not painful and the patient usually comes for examination for aesthetic reasons.

Causes of Stye

1. Staphylococcal bacteria are the most common cause
2. Improper diet and dehydration
3. Poor hygiene, eye contact with dirty hands, use of someone else’s makeup, poor makeup removal, use of dirty and damp towels
4. It occurs more frequently in diabetics and in persons with reduced immunity

Stye symptoms

1. Redness accompanied by a feeling of discomfort and pain in the area where the stye is formed.
2. The site of formation soon becomes swollen and a painful and a lump is formed, making it difficult to close the eyelid (blinking pain).
3. Tearing, burning, irritation, foreign body sensation in the eye, light sensitivity of the eye, poor visual acuity.
4. In the final stage, a purulent tip is created on the surface of the skin, which usually leaks out over time and the pain and symptoms are relieved.
5. Chalazion is a chronic inflammation of the Meibomian glands that results from a blockage of the drainage gland duct, usually about the size of a pea grain, and the skin above it is usually unchanged.

Risk factors

Age, gender
Stye can occur in all age groups, equally in men and women.

Stye treatment

The hordeolum usually opens up spontaneously, like any ulcer, the pus drains out and the inflammation subsides. If signs of purulent abscess formation appear, the condition should be treated promptly.
Care should be taken with the hygiene fo the eyelids (with wet wipes or mild baby shampoo soaked in warm water). Initially, the stye is treated with cold compresses and prescribed drops and / or ointment therapy.
Unless the stye withdraws with therapy, it must be surgically removed.
In the case of chalazion, warm compresses are tried to soften the content, but are much more difficult to absorb without surgery.

Surgical Stye Removal

Before surgery

Before the surgery, a detailed specialist examination is performed. It is explained to the patient what the procedure will look like, after which premedication is given and the patient is asked to sign an informed consent.

The course of the surgery

The patient is comfortably placed on the bed in the operating theatre. Nurses disinfect the skin around the eyes and put a sterile cover over the patient.

The surgery takes about 10 minutes. The patient lies on the bed and is constantly awake and communicating with the surgeon. The eyelid is anesthetized so that the procedure is completely painless and comfortable. Because the surgery is elegant and quick, most patients are surprised that everything went so quickly and easily and that all the fear people usually have before the surgery was unfounded.

The surgery is performed on the inside of the eyelid so that no scar remains.
If the fibrous capsule around the lesion remains – chalazion may reappear. In case of recurrence at the same site, a spicimen should be taken for pathological analysis because very rarely a malignant tumor of the sebaceous gland (adenocarcinoma sabaceum) cells may be diagnosed.

After the surgery

After the surgery, the patient wears a sterile eyepatch. Upon dismissal from the clinic, patiet receives post-operative therapy consisting of eyedrops and / or ointments and instructions to be followed. Three hours after the procedure, the patient removes the eyepatch  from the eye and begins with the prescribed therapy. The second day the patient comes for a checkup and until then adverse microclimatic conditions (wind, dust, smoke) should be avoided. Another control examination is advised for 7-10 days and afterwards if needed.

VIRAL WARTS

Viral wart (verruca vulgaris) is a papillomatous outgrowth on the skin and the edges of the eyelids caused by the human papillomavirus. It is treated surgically or is frozen with cryotherapy. Larger lesion are removed operatively.
